General Purpose

The MakePDFA.NET is a .NET component which is able to convert Office 2003/2007 documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project) to PDF or PDF/A-1b. The main purpose of the component is that provides an unified interface to convert several document types to PDF or PDF/A. Additional formats which are supported are:

• images (tif, png, jpg, gif, bmp) direct conversion to PDF, PDF/A-1b, or PDF/A-1a;
• zip archives;
• Outlook messages;
• direct conversion of PDF documents to PDF/A-1b;
• html and xml documents.

The MakePDF.NET component is based on several plugins. The following plugins are available:

• OfficeOLE (supported input formats: doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx, msg, mpp, vsd, and vdx): the conversion is done via printing process on the eDocPrintPro  or eDocPrintPro PDF/A, the output can be PDF or PDF/A-1b;
• Image2PDF (supported formats: tif, jpg, bmp, gif, and png): direct conversion width PdfNET, the output can be PDF, PDF/A1-b, PDF/A-1a;
• FREngine (supported formats: tif, png, jpg, bmp, gif, pcx, and dcx): the conversion is done via OCR process, the result will be a searchable PDF or PDF/A-1b document;
• iOCR (supported format: tif): the conversion is done via OCR process, the result will be a searchable PDF or PDF/A-1b document;
• IEEngine (supported formats: htm, html, and xml): the document is loaded in the IE ActiveX control, the conversion is done via printing process on the eDocPrintPro or eDocPrintPro PDF/A;
• Zip (supported format: zip): as a first step of the conversion process, all files will be extracted and converted to PDF. Optionally it is possible to replace the files which are not convertable to PDF or PDF/A with an empty error page. After the files are converted the result PDF documents will be merged to a single PDF or PDF/A-1b document.
• Pdf2Pdf(a) (supported format: pdf): direct conversion with PdfNET to PDF/A-1b;

MAY Computer has developed several products which are based on or partially based on this conversion technology:

• Office2PDFA (the entire suite was used);
• AutoOCR (FREngine and iOCR plugins): convert image documents to PDF or PDF/A;
• PDF/A Converter Service (direct PDF/A conversion with PdfNET, Pdf2pdf(a) plugins): convert PDF documents to PDF/A-1b;
• DMArch (the entire MakePDFA.NET suite): convert Hummingbird DM documents to PDF or PDF/A;
• PdfNET SDK: core PDF routines. The PdfNET SDK is used by all applications and components above.

Installation

Prerequisites:

• Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008 with IE6 or higher;
• Office 2003/2007;
• eDocPrintPro / eDocPrintPro PDF/A add-on;
• FREngine;

Installation process:

1. Run the Setup executable

The setup will install all the needed binaries and a sample Visual C# 2008 project. The sample project requires Visual Studio 2008 (Express editions are also supported).

Usage

The sample application contains the following class "Office2PdfConverter". The class has an initialization method where all supported engines are added to the engine manager. The default associations are also configured. The sample application also saves and restores the configuration settings (EngineManagerSettings.xml). To convert a document to PDF or PDF/A call the "Convert" method of the Office2PdfConverter class. For more details please consult the source code of the sample project.

Notes

In order to convert Office documents to PDF or PDF/A the eDocPrintPro (or eDocPrintPro PDF/A AddOn) and MS Office 2003/2007 should be installed. The FREngine pluging requires the FREngine.
